It is easily recognized in the fall when the red leaves stand out along the forest edges along. Red maples do produce some sap, but not as abundantly as the sugar maple. The red maple is also known as scarlet maple and swamp maple. The medium-to-large red maple ushers in spring with red flowers and winged seeds. The width of the Red Maple tree is typically a bit less than the height and oval or round in shape. Red Maple trees are generally 40-60 feet tall, but occasionally in the wild can reach 100-120 feet. In Central and North Florida, it puts on an amazing show each spring with a beautiful display of pink flowers. Species Range: As one of the most abundant native trees in eastern North America, the red maple ranges from southeastern Ontario down to Florida and over to. The Red Maple scientific name is: Acer Rubrum. It most prefers somewhat wet soil conditions and lots of sun with a minimum of 6 hours a day. Leaf Scorch, a noninfectious, environmental condition, occurs when young trees experience prolonged periods of dry, windy weather, low rainfall and high temperatures with bright sunshine when the trees roots are unable to supply water to the foliage as rapidly as it is lost by transpiration from the leaves. If you’re looking for small trees, consider the redbud. Growing up to 60’ in height, the red maple can grow in acidic, loamy, moist, rich, sandy, silty loamy, well-drained and clay soils. The blush of early red maple leaves heralds spring across the deciduous forests of eastern North America, from Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Ontario to southern Texas, eastern Oklahoma and Florida.Īs the spring season deepens toward summer, the red-tinged leaves turn green, then take on often spectacularly deep red and yellow hues in autumn.
